Monitor AI visibility for free: Google Search Console launches AI performance reports for all websites
Since 31 August 2026, Google Search Console shows every website how often it appears in AI Overviews and AI Mode — free, without third-party tools. This practical guide explains how to activate the report and which decisions SMEs can base on the data.
Anyone wanting to know how often their website appears in Google AI features like AI Overviews had two options until recently: pay for expensive third-party tools or check results manually. Since 31 August 2026, there is a third way: Google has unlocked Generative AI Performance Reports in Search Console for all websites worldwide — free of charge, directly inside the familiar GSC interface.
For mid-sized companies, this is a meaningful development. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization, the visibility within AI-powered search results — is no longer a niche topic. A structured AI integration starts with measuring how your company appears in AI answers in the first place. There is now a free tool for exactly that, provided directly by Google.
What the new report measures — and what it still lacks
The new section shows how often individual URLs from your website appear as sources in Google AI features. This includes AI Overviews (the AI summaries shown above classic search results), AI Mode and AI-powered functions in Google Discover. Data can be filtered by URL, country, device and time period — hourly, daily, weekly or monthly. Source: Search Engine Land, 31 August 2026.
- Impressions per URL in generative AI features: see which of your pages appear as sources and how frequently.
- Breakdown by country, device and time period: identify whether certain topics or audience segments perform particularly well or poorly.
- Opt-out toggle: any website can remove its content from Google AI search features with a single switch — relevant for pages with confidential or competitively sensitive content.
- What is still missing: click data, click-through rates (CTR) and search queries are not included. The report measures visibility, not traffic — an important limitation to keep in mind.
Practical use cases for SMEs
The reports are relevant for more than large marketing departments or SEO agencies. Mid-sized companies can derive concrete actions from the first data:
- Build a baseline: anyone who starts measuring now will have reliable comparison data in 90 days. Historical data is not available — the earlier you start, the sooner you have a decision basis.
- Analyse well-performing pages: pages with many AI Overviews impressions typically answer questions clearly and with structure. Examine what these pages share and apply those principles to other content.
- Improve underperforming pages strategically: pages that rank well in classic Google search but rarely appear in AI features often benefit from more structured text, added FAQ sections and clearer answers to specific questions.
- Use the opt-out deliberately: for pages with internal pricing, unreleased product information or confidential content, there is now an official way to exclude them from AI results.
- Prepare agency and consulting meetings with data: companies working with web development or SEO advisors can now enter those conversations with concrete AI visibility figures rather than estimates.
Before you start: what to check
- Access rights in GSC: you need owner or full-user permissions for the property. In many SME accounts, not everyone has access — clarify this before you start.
- Property type matters: use a Domain Property rather than a URL-prefix property where possible. It captures all subdomains and protocol variants and delivers more complete data.
- Account for data gaps: Google recommends waiting a few weeks for the report to show complete data sets. Initial numbers may be incomplete.
- No standalone ROI proof: since click data is absent, the direct traffic contribution of AI Overviews cannot be measured from this report alone. Use it as a visibility indicator, not a traffic source.
- Opting out has consequences: removing content from AI features also means losing potential impressions and visibility in those areas — weigh this deliberately.
Verdict: who should act now — and who can wait?
The new GSC report is worth setting up for every mid-sized company with a public website — regardless of how far along your AI search strategy already is. The effort is minimal: activate the report, check the property, read the first numbers. That takes 20 minutes and no budget.
Anyone not yet active in Search Console should start there first — without GSC access, not just this report but the entire picture of organic website performance is missing. For companies already working regularly in GSC, the AI performance reports should become part of the standard status overview starting today.
The first step towards better AI visibility is the same as with classic SEO: measure before you optimise.
